How to successfully co-parent

|

Co-parenting with an ex can be challenging. If you’re a Texas resident, here are some family law tips to keep in mind to make sure that your child(ren) receives the care and attention and care they need from both parents.

What is co-parenting?

Divorce and custody law indicates that unless your family has faced issues such as substance abuse or domestic violence, co-parenting will allow both parents to continue playing an active role in children’s lives. This parenting arrangement also allows the children to maintain a close relationship with both parents which can contribute to the child’s emotional and mental wellbeing. However, co-parenting with an ex after a breakup, even if the divorce was amicable, is often easier said than done.

Joint custody agreements

If you and your ex go to family law court and are both granted joint custody, the relationship can be stressful if you have a strained relationship with your ex.

You may be concerned about your ex’s ability to parent properly or pay child support on time. Or, you may be worried that you won’t be able to overcome all the conflict in your relationship. It is important for both you and your ex to be willing to work together as much as possible for the good of your children. You may also need assistance with resolving conflicts so that your children can thrive in safe and healthy environments.

Effective co-parenting

One of the best ways to make co-parenting work for your family is to separate your relationship with your ex from the relationship you have with your children. After you receive your custody verdict from family law court, it may be helpful to start thinking about your relationship with your ex in a brand new way. Focusing on the children instead of your feelings for each other is often best.
