How to stay safe when driving near tractor-trailers

On Behalf of | Oct 28, 2022 | Personal Injury |

Texas highways are awash in tractor-trailers and other large commercial vehicles at all times, and it is easy to get caught up in traffic when they are near. No passenger car or SUV is a physical match for a big rig when an accident occurs, which means that lives are in peril in dangerous situations like these. Drivers should be proactive in avoiding these situations, and there are a few basic rules to follow beyond using standard defensive driving strategies.

Avoid passing

One of the most dangerous moves a driver can make is minimize passing a truck whenever possible. Many motor vehicle accidents occur when a passenger car moves into the left lane alongside a truck in a blind spot and does not completely pass quickly. Never hold the left lane next to a truck, and avoid passing when possible.

Stop for a short break

Sometimes a driver can stop their vehicle and let larger traffic pass them in certain situations. While this step can be difficult to improve a dangerous driving scenario in congested rush hour traffic, it can be a simple fix that can reduce auto accidents that are commonly fatal crashes, including multiple vehicle collisions in inclement weather.

Upgrade lighting equipment

Making a vehicle more visible on the highway is also a good safety step for many car and truck owners. This can apply to tractor-trailer owners as well as passenger vehicles. Night time lighting is especially important, and there are several products on the market that can be added to a vehicle in making it more visible in dark driving situations.
