Texas leads the nation for drivers falling asleep at the wheel

Whether it be that Texas is just a very big state that can take a long time to drive through or because the people of Texas are just very hard-working, the state ranks at the top of the list in the country for drowsy drivers.

Statistics show that Texas drivers who were driving drowsy or fell asleep at the wheel accounted for 9,704 accidents in 2017. That breaks down to an average of 26 crashes each day. Out of those crashes, there were 160 fatalities.

Why is drowsy or fatigued driving dangerous?

Being awake or having very minimal rest for 18-hours can have the same affect on your driving as alcohol. Sleepiness impacts your basic skills, such as:

  • Adequate attention span
  • Reaction time
  • Proper judgement

When your body is extremely tired, it can sometimes force sleep without you realizing it. Before you catch yourself, you may have had your eyes closed for several seconds. This is enough time to lose control of your vehicle or veer into other lanes of traffic.

Do not leave it to chance

Newer vehicles have technology that is equipped to guard against drowsy drivers and sound an alarm. While this is a wonderful innovation that can help prevent crashes, the best thing you can do is not drive fatigued to begin with. If you are driving and notice signs of fatigue, such as head-bobbing, watery eyes or extreme yawning, you can:

  • Pull over, and take a quick 20 minute nap
  • Ask a passenger to drive
  • Drink caffeinated beverages
  • Roll down the windows
  • Sing to the radio

If you are on a long drive, do not worry about getting to your destination quickly. If you are having a hard time staying awake, pull over for a long rest or find overnight lodging.

With Texas leading the way in drowsy driving crashes, take precautions to be safer on the roads. If you were injured in an accident due to a drowsy driver, you should contact an attorney right away to talk about possible compensation.
